This terrific six-person cast (Lauren Anderson, Ryan Nelson, Nissa Nordland, Kory Pullam, Tom Reed, and Taj Ruler) wrote and performs over 20 sketches, all centered around the workplace theme. While there aren't as many references to one of my favorite TV shows The Walking Dead (which I'll be watching tonight, the Oscars can wait, but Rick and Co. cannot!) as I expected, there are plenty of TV and pop culture references to keep me happy. There's also not as much political humor as I expected, except the occasional dig at Trump, but that may change over the four-month run of the show. While I hadn't been to a BNW show before, I have been in their theater on Hennepin Avenue a few times. It's a nice intimate space with cabaret tables in front and a few rows of seating in back, with a ledge upon which you can set your drink. And with plentiful bars that seems to be part of the experience (ask for half-off drink specials with alternate transportation). As they say, "the more you drink the funnier we get!"
Without giving away too many punch lines, here are a few of my favorite moments from the under two hour show (including intermission):
- Most of the sketches take place at a company called Dynacompuglobaltech, which used to be Dynacompuglobal, which used to be Dynacompu, which used to be Fingerhut. Been there, done that!
- Human resources is called human capital, because somehow that's better? At my company we're called associates, not employees. This stuff is funny because it's true!
- This musical theater nerd geeked out over the West Side Story montage, pitting Sales against Marketing in their fight over a conference room (with music direction and piano accompaniment by Josie Just).
- Two short videos showed a forward thinking executive applying the "tiny house" fad to the office. Everyone is miserable but he saved the company $380,000 so it was a win!
- All I need in life is Ryan Nelson and Tom Reed singing silly (and possibly offensive) jingles to the tune of Elton John's "Your Song." How edgy!
- Is there anything worse than the shared office fridge?! Human capital tells us to label our food, but it doesn't work, people still steal it! Then there's the problem with smelly leftovers. The issue got so bad at my office that they toss everything at the end of every day. Every day! Madness. (Again, true=funny.)
- In a recurring sketch called "Dead Sick," the scary zombies are coworkers with the flu who don't want to use their PTO on a sick day, and instead come into the office where they spread their germs. The flu is worse than zombies!
- I loved Kory's Barry White-esque crooning about casual Friday, the day when dreams come true, if those dreams involve middle aged women wearing capris.
- A rap about smoking goes a little too far. Just because you smoke doesn't make you Don Draper!
- The very funny and specific characters created by the cast include Lauren's Minnesota nice human capital rep, Ryan's racist conservative jerk of a boss, Nissa's too chatty receptionist, Kory's nice guy crooner, Tom's overly enthusiastic and well-endowed new employee, and Taj's employee who's always in-to-it.
I don't think anyone needs me to tell them that Brave New Workshop does great, smart, funny work, their record has proven that. But I will tell you that The Working Dead is a hilarious good time, and sketch comedy is a nice change of pace from the usual theater fare. This one's playing through June 11, so head downtown and be prepared to laugh!
