The hero of the story, a newly married blind woman, is hindered neither by her disability nor her gender (this is 1966, remember). Using her intellect, courage, and physical strength, Susan figures out what's going on and saves herself and her husband from some pretty serious consequences. The events begin when Susan's photographer husband Sam brings home a doll in his travel case, and claims he doesn't know where it came from. The doll contains something precious, and when its owner(s) come to find it, serious trouble ensues. Yes the plot is a bit convoluted with the doll and the train and the phone calls and the blinds and the various bad guys in play, but hold on, because it's worth the ride. Sam is away when the bad guys show up, and Susan has no one but herself, her remaining strengthened four senses, and the endearingly bratty neighbor girl to get her out of it. She comes up with a plan that involves removing fuses to pitch the basement apartment into utter darkness, putting her at an advantage over her sighted attacker.*
A story like this relies on precise lighting effects, and lighting designer Sadie Ward accomplishes it well within the limitations of the space. I couldn't help wishing it were darker (light from the EXIT sign and other ambient light keep it from being pitch black), but it's still pretty cool to experience a little of what Susan does, when you can't really see what's happening on stage and have to rely on the sound of voices and footsteps. The script very specifically mentions stairs up to the apartment door, which are nicely accomplished here by using the stairs into an aisle of the audience, although from where I was sitting I couldn't see the comings and goings from the upper door. Still, the all-important fridge, safe, desk, and kitchen counter are well represented and spaced around the stage (set design by Devyn Becker). Combined with mood music, the overall effect is chilling at times.

Wait Until Dark continues at Theatre in the Round through September 30. It's a solid production of a classic and entertaining thriller.
